چکیده

In this paper, we extend a nonnegatively constrained iterative method and three stopping rules for its iterations to the medical imaging inverse problems of computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT); the iterative method and stopping rules were introduced for use in astronomical imaging. The paper begins with a brief introduction to the CT, PET, and SPECT mathematical and statistical models.

An Nonnegatively Constrained Iterative Method for Positron Emission Tomography

In positron emission tomography (PET), data is collected via the detection of photons emitted by a radioactive tracer within the subject. The noise in PET data is Poisson, and hence, it is typical to reconstruct the tracer density distribution via the computation of an approximate minimizer of the negative-log Poisson likelihood function. In this paper, we present an iterative method for the so...

Stopping Rules for a Nonnegatively Constrained Iterative Method for Ill-posed Poisson Imaging Problems

Image data is often collected by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera. CCD camera noise is known to be well-modeled by a Poisson distribution. If this is taken into account, the negative-log of the Poisson likelihood is the resulting data-fidelity function. We derive, via a Taylor series argument, a weighted least squares approximation of the negative-log of the Poisson likelihood function. The...

Covariance-Preconditioned Iterative Methods for Nonnegatively Constrained Astronomical Imaging

We consider the problem of solving ill-conditioned linear systems Ax = b subject to the nonnegativity constraint x ≥ 0, and in which the vector b is a realization of a random vector b̂, i.e. b is noisy. We explore what the statistical literature tells us about solving noisy linear systems; we discuss the effect that a substantial black background in the astronomical object being viewed has on th...

Comparing different stopping criteria for fuzzy decision tree induction through IDFID3

Fuzzy Decision Tree (FDT) classifiers combine decision trees with approximate reasoning offered by fuzzy representation to deal with language and measurement uncertainties. When a FDT induction algorithm utilizes stopping criteria for early stopping of the tree's growth, threshold values of stopping criteria will control the number of nodes. Finding a proper threshold value for a stopping crite...
